When I first started blogging, I assumed that using a blog platform, instead of hosting your own blog, would drive traffic to the blog. As it turned out, I was wrong. The platforms themselves, and the community, may get you a handful of hits per day, but only if you blog several times a day causing your blog to appear on the”updated blogs” list for like 30 seconds until you get bumped off by 100,000 other blogs that were just updated. You actually have to put a little work into it if you want to start climbing your way to the top. You should first set your blog up with Technorati if you haven’t done so yet. You’ll immediately start getting traffic from there.
The first time around it took months for the search engines to find me and my ranking was so low that even if I did show up, it was on page 484. I’d say that it took probably 6-8 months before I was receiving steady traffic and appearing on page 1 or 2 of the search engines for content related searches. I didn’t do any submissions of that blog. As most of you know, I moved my blog to WordPress three weeks ago so I have to work my way back up. I’m not willing to wait 6-8 months to rebuild the traffic that I had.
I used to run a web-based business so I know how to “market” a website. Left to it’s own devices, it could take months, years or never for your site to start appearing anywhere. Referrals and links are important. One thing I should mention is that I don’t do “link exchanges.” It works for some people, but with link exchanges, you sometimes become “affiliated” with people you’d really rather not be affiliated with. Sometimes it becomes bad for business. Once I linked to someone else’s blog that linked to me and then three days later I went back to check the blog and there was a picture of some guy’s wang and lots of F and C words. I was mortified. I have kids! I can’t be linking to sites like that! So that lesson was learned the hard way. And no, I’m not giving you the link.
This time around, I decided to market my blog, just like it was a business website I’d just set up. You need to be your own webmaster. I immediately started submitting it to the search engines. I started listing it in blog directories. I believe in “earning” links- writing something interesting so that people link to you. With just doing link exchanges, it’s very unlikely that someone who has an actual interest in your blog will a. visit it and b. come back. Your readers are your “customers.” You want the people who find you to actually be interested in the subject matter. It is those people who will return, those people who will link to you, and those people who will tell their friends. Again, very much like a business.
So, you ask, where do I go to start submitting my website? First let me tell you something: don’t pay for things you can get for free. The paid submissions are a waste of money. I submitted to several engines and directories that promised if I didn’t pay it would be months before my submissions began to show up. It’s been about two weeks, and lo and behold, I’m getting referrals from those very engines. So what follows is a list of where to go to submit your blog. Make sure that you use a real email address when they ask for it, because many blog directories will ask you to confirm your submission by email. When you submit what topics you talk about, make sure you give an accurate description. You’re cheating yourself by saying you blog about golf when you’ve never even mentioned it. Make sure that you tag each and every blog entry accurately with whatever subject you chose to write about. This helps search engines, bots and people find you.
So here you go, start submitting away. You need only submit your “main” page, the bots will do the rest. Some sites want your feed address. Pay attention to what they’re asking for. WordPress automatically submits your blog to several search engines that would otherwise take time to be listed in- big bonus!
Oh and remember where you found this gold mine of information.
Google (VERY VALUABLE!)
Yahoo (You may need to log in and/or register to see this page. If so, right click on this link to see the address and copy and paste it into your browser after you log into yahoo.)
MSN
Jayde (Requires email validation)
Open Directory (Strict Guidelines!)
Scrub the Web
Exact Seek
Ask Jeeves
EntireWeb
Alexa
Walhello
Blog Search
Free Web Submission
Parenting Blog Directory (Submit only Parenting Sites)
Try such sites as BlogPulse, BlogFlux, Blogorama and Popdex too.
RSS Submissionshas a huge list of blog directories to submit your blog to.
There are several major search engines that power the smaller search engines. So once you start appearing on Google, MSN and Yahoo, your blog will start appearing in the smaller ones as well. It may take awhile to really get a good ranking in the some of the search engines, but be patient and keep blogging. The more entries you write, the more content you have that is searchable. And when people click on those links in the search engines, it increases your popularity and you get a higher ranking. It’s all a very incestuous process. It’s ok if you “overlap” when submitting sites. The more bots that crawl your site, the more traffic you will get from the search engines. You also want to be listed in as many blog directories as you can.
Mention other people and link to them. Give credit where credit is due. If you see a subject that you want to blog about on someone else’s blog, make sure you link back to that person. Good will goes a long way towards link love. Don’t be afraid to leave relevant comments on other people’s sites. Yeah, I’m talking to you, lurkers!
Lastly, think about the content. Good writing, interesting subjects and pictures are what will make or break a blog. No one really wants to read about how you went to the store today. Unless you tell them about how you went into the store, saw your reflection in the glass and noticed you had toilet paper streaming out from your pants like a white, waving tail. You can’t be afraid to put yourself out there. People keep coming back for the laughs. And if you’re wondering how I came up with that creative scenario, it was derived from the time my grandmother came out of the bathroom on the airplane with the toilet seat cover tucked into the back of her pants, waving like the tails on a tux. Yep. Gotta love my grandma.
Good luck! May you have lots of traffic and many comments…..

I registered at Technorati, just now. I’ve thought about it, but it was this post that got me to “Just Do It” to steal somebody else’s marketing campaign.
My blog currently ranks: 1,116,257
Gotta start somewhere!
I’m glad you liked my blog enough that I could earn a weblink (and sorted alphabetically, too).

Beau-
GOOD! You’ll get some traffic form Technorati within hours. It’s great.
You passed the no p0rn, no foul language, family friendly blog test. lol.

Oh and did I mention that I made the switch to WordPress primarily because Spaces changed my address I think it was 4 times in a span of a few months and I lost about 500 links? Sigh. So I have to start all over again. When they changed over to live.com and I saw they lost everything AGAIN, I threw in the towel.

[...] trying to get my hit count up… OK. I don't know why I am bothering but I thought it would be worth trying a few different things to see what affects my blog count. I took some advice from another blogger and signed up with Technorati to see if it has any affect. So here goes. Here's the link to my Technorati Profile that I needed to add in a new blog post. [...] I hope you were listening when I told you how to increase traffic to your blog. Refresh your memory here. My traffic has taken a huge jump and I appeared (albeit briefly) on the WordPress list of blogs that had the highest jump in traffic. Now go back and do what I told you to do instead of just registering with Technorati and hoping the rest goes to plan. Get listed in the Yahoo Directories, I’ve been getting a ton of traffic from there. And next time I tell you to do something, do it. [...]

Thanks for this post! After a kazillion years on the internet and more gadgets in my house to open up a Best Buy store, I just couldn’t get the whole blog thing down. I passed on website design years ago because my son was proficient at it so it was a skill that I didn’t have to learn. But, after the murder of my husband, fighting almost a decade to keep the case from going cold, finally getting an indictment in January only to have some bureaucratic BS make it possible for the suspect to escape (WHEW!), I had it. So I figured out how to do a blog which focuses on the investigation and the fugitive. But didn’t know how to get people to see it. You have saved my life!! Thanks so much!

Linda- Good Luck with your blog and justice for your husband. You might try getting on America’s Most Wanted. My heart goes out to you.

Thanks for your kind words of support. One the “AMW” producers is a good friend of mine. She has been holding the story ever since it happened. The DA’s office claims that any media exposure will “drive the suspect further underground”. I went along with this position for several weeks but I no longer believe that to be the case. I know that the DA’s office just doesn’t want anyone to know that they blew this.
This has been particularly difficult for me because not only am I “the victim’s family”, I am also a writer/publicist. I put on my “widow” hat at first and didn’t write anything about this. But I’m tired of the crap. How long does it take well-educated law enforcement individuals to catch a guy with a GED?! So my first step was to create the blog. Now I am getting ready to tell all of my friends who are reporters, writers, and journalists to bring the thunder. I know that all it takes is the “Crimestoppers Crackhead Reward” to smoke this guy out.
Girl, there is so much more to this story that you would choke! This has been a screw-up of gigantic proportions. I have taken off my “widder weeds” and I am now writing a book about it. I will be sending out query letters in a few weeks. It doesn’t take me long to write anything but this is just so painful.
Good news! I’m not waiting for the trial since I know something else will probably get screwed up. I will be spending the month of September in Tuscany, looking for a small property to move in permanently after I sell my house here. I think the change will have a tremendous positive effect on my lupus. Just think of sitting on my own terrazzo, watching shirtless young Italians working in the garden. Just blocks from the beach! That’s why I have to write a book - to pay for this move. LOL
Thanks again!
PS: Your advice has my blog coming up on the first page of Google! TWICE! (I also submitted it to http://www.digg.com). Thank you, thank you, thank you! I didn’t know what I was doing but you helped me so much. I’d like to add you as a link. LMK if that’s OK with you.

Great post, I followed it and hope to increase my blog traffic. Something important around increasing traffic is with no doubt helping other sites with comments and feedback. That puts you in others minds for a second. ( it is in spanish http://sesolibre.com )

Eduardo- !Buena Suerte con Sesolibre!

Linda- Someone I missed your comment. Sorry about that. I really hope the trial goes well and they catch the guy. Enjoy Tuscany!

Well, that’s to additional information in my “virgin blog” about the escape of the suspect in my husband killer in January 2007 after a 10 year fight to get him indicted, he has been recaptured and extradited back to Georgia for trial. Since law enforcement officials were responsible for the escape, they didn’t want any media involvement. But after he was still on the run after a month, I decided to learn how to do a blog. THAT was hard enough but I would not have known anything about creating traffic and visibility without the information and sites that I found here.
I cannot begin to thank you enough for sharing this information with us. I know that the suspect would still be out there, possibly causing another family horrible grief by committing another senseless crime. I’m finished with my “Crime Fighting Career”! The stress has seriously maligned me health by exacerbating the systemic lupus that I’ve been battling for over 25 years. I will not being staying here for the trial. My plans are to get to Tuscany as soon as I can. Hopefully I will get better, both physically and mentally, where there’s a slower way of life. I can only repay you by offering my world-class recipe for real Créole gumbo, a well-guarded secret for over 200 years by my late husband’s black Créole family in New Iberia, Louisiana, home of the best hot sauce ever created.
Thanks so much for your help. And good luck to you in your future endeavors.

Linda- WOO HOOO!!! I’m so glad they got him. Take care of yourself and get some well-deserved rest. I hope your new life in Tuscany brings you what you’re hoping for.
I would LOVE your recipe! I’m from New Orleans. My family is Cajun so we don’t have all the good creole recipes!!!! I’ve even been to the McIlhenney factory in New Iberia lol.

I had a regular wordpress.com blog for a while and I just purchased a domain and moved sites. I was disapointed that the steady flow of decent traffic nose dived and I had to start back at the begining. Thanks for the list I hope ths helps me get some of my traffic back!
