The Sequim nightmare continues….Remember I told you about the nightmare experience we had with Brigadoon Vacation Rentals? Well you’re not going to believe what’s been going on since then. According to them, I woke up one morning, and decided to ruin their lives. It had nothing to do with their false advertising and filthy, decrepit home. Oh, and before you bad mouth them, you somehow owe them a courtesy call.
We have been constantly harassed by the owners of Brigadoon, the owner of the piece of crap we had to stay in for the first five days (Water’s Edge) AND now, the final straw, the owners of the second Brigadoon rental we stayed in (Hideaway Hut), have sent us a letter telling us they are going to sue us. I have received countless messages from other owners threatening to sue us as well. Let me start at the beginning.
When I called Brigadoon to rent Water’s Edge, I was given the hard sell. She kept telling me over and over how it was one of their most popular rentals and I needed to book at least six months in advance, blah blah blah. I envisioned a really nice place. What I did NOT envision was a run-down mobile home, with a shower door that didn’t even close, bathrooms that reeked of urine, sticky, filthy dishes and kitchen, dusty, dirty floors, and grime on the blinds so thick, it was repulsive to touch, and they think that I owe them a phone call to give them a chance to change me from one of their “best rentals” to an even shittier mobile home?!?! Honestly folks. I just can’t see how the responsibility lies with ME here. They somehow think that I should have spent my vacation looking for another place to stay, instead of sucking it up and trying to make the best of it. It seemed to me that it was just easier to clean the filth. Let me lay out the timeline for you:
July 1: Original Blog Entry
July 5: They finally check their referrers, see the entry and I get the first phone call from the owner of Water’s Edge. In this phone call he apologizes for the condition of the property, however keeps saying that it’s still satisfactory for Middle America essentially saying that if I wasn’t so snobby I wouldn’t have complaints. In all subsequent communications, he has decided that I made everything up. It’s not important to you, Middle America, that it’s a run-down mobile home because it’s got two bedrooms and it’s on the water. For $140 a night. How ya’ like them apples, Middle America? You all find the filth and broken-down acceptable.
July 6: The owner of Water’s Edge has somehow decided that my personal weblog is a public forum to which he is appointed moderator. No lie folks, he was answering your comments like he owned the place. He also tried to post what amounts to about 2 pages of comments from “satisfied” customers.
July 11: Somewhere around this time, the owners of Brigadoon apparently alerted their owners to my blog entry and I start getting all these fake comments. Some are from the same IP addresses (same person) where in one comment proposing to be someone who rented from them and was satisfied, and in another comment posing as an owner of another Brigadoon rental, telling me I am lying and threatening to sue me. (Rich, huh?) These morons are logging in under different names but the IP address (and sometimes even the email address!) is the same.
July 13: We finally leave Sequim. As we are packing up, and I’m putting the sofa bed, where the kids slept, back together, I notice that the sofa cushion was placed next to the heater vent. The heater vent was so hot, that it damaged the cushion. The leather appeared to have “shrunk.” Oy. I wish it had said somewhere that these vents were not normal heater vents and were electric. I’ve never lived anywhere where heater vents could get that hot. Sigh. So anyway, I left a note on the table for the owner telling the owner I would pay for the cost to replace the cushion. Steve got a call from them while I was in Louisiana. They wanted $500. Yes, wait, hold on to your hats, folks, they wanted $500 to replace a cushion on a $1600 couch. Rather than simply order a new cushion for the couch from the retailer or Barcalounger and forward us the bill, they wanted us to pay for a temporary fix to the damaged cushion, then to have a new cushion custom built, then to buy paint for the heater grate, and finally compensation for the “couple hours” of time it took him to paint the grate. When we balked at sending them $500 for the cushion and Steve asked for a quote, a receipt, anything to justify what the amount they were asking for, they faxed us an illegible copy of the purchase receipt for the couch. Steve threw up his hands in disgust.
July 11- August 11: We got more comments on the blog from “concerned citizens” that obviously had more insight into the situation than what I offered in my post, and then on August 11, the owner of Water’s Edge calls Steve at work to harass us further. He reposts on Aug 10, his two page long account of his satisfied customers. On Monday, August 11, he demands that I take the original entry down. He claims I am blocking the free flow of information on my blog because I am blocking fraudulent comments and him as moderator. Notice the irony that he wants any negative comments about his rental blocked. Then Steve gets ANOTHER email from the owner of Brigadoon demanding to know why I hadn’t called her before blogging. Here was his reply:
Marilyn,
Your demand for an explanation really underscores the point I made in my previous email about continued harassment, prolonging our negative experience for weeks after the transaction.
In our view, there was no remedy to apply to the situation that would not have further negatively impacted our vacation. Re-packing, moving, or arguing for our money back were not activities that we wanted to spend our limited vacation time engaged in. As I said in my previous email, we felt that we were not dealt with honestly up-front about the property, yet we did what we could to minimize the impact on our family’s vacation.
I am somewhat surprised you would even ask why we would move to another Brigadoon rental. We certainly were not going to spend our vacation scrambling to find another place to stay nor were we going to cut our vacation short. What’s more, we had already pre-paid for the rentals and did not wish to engage in a protracted argument to get our money back.
The fact that you would openly wonder why we would not act to further inconvenience ourselves illustrates to me a certain disconnectedness from your customer experience. My advice would be to create new avenues for customers to offer feedback and to act on that feedback. For example, a simple check-out time customer survey would probably provide a lot of enlightening data on things you assume are going fine just because you’re not asking the questions.
You and your owners have handled this situation very poorly. I am going to ask you people one more time to leave us alone. The repeated, unwanted contact initiated by you and your property owners is not only a most illogical way to treat a dissatisfied customer, but the veiled threats and open hostility we have received serve no legitimate purpose except to inflict emotional distress.
Believe it or not, she sends him more email. On August 24, she sets up a wordpress “rebuttal” and clearly shows no signs of stopping the harassment. Sigh. The most ludicrous part of this whole thing is she’s howling about how I have ruined her business with my “lies.” However? For the last six weeks my stats on this entry show that daily average visits are usually less than 5 hits per day.
I’m still getting fake comments and we received a certified letter last week. It says “Please immediately forward a check for $500. If we do not receive payment within seven days we will be forced to seek a judgment from the court of Clallam County.”
So for two months I have held my tongue so as not to further inflame the situation while we’ve been threatened and harassed both at home, on vacation and at work. It has come to my attention that the owner of Water’s Edge has begun harassing my readers as well. That’s YOU, folks! Blows your mind, doesn’t it? But no more. They’ve finally crossed the line. Last I checked, the constitution provided me the right to free speech. Last I checked, we weren’t living in some communist country where any negative thoughts and comments were to be censored. I have the right to state my opinion that Water’s Edge was dirty and run-down. Look here for yourselves, people. Look at the header photo of the deck.
This is the actual deck and back of the home, taken facing the opposite direction from the picture in the above link:
I know what you’re saying… “Mmmm. But it has a good floor plan!” But wait! That’s not all folks! The deck of this luxury home comes complete with spider infestation:
Yeah. Steve thought it would make a cool picture. Me? Not so much. This was right by the door to get in and out of the house onto the “luxury” deck.
If someone else had blogged about their experiences with Brigadoon, I would not have made the mistake of renting from a group of people who portend to rent beautiful homes on the beach, that are actually run-down mobile homes and then harass anyone who is dissatisfied. Had Brigadoon been HONEST up front, I would have known that we were renting A MOBILE HOME and gone somewhere else!
Steve sent them a $500 check because we are so tired of fighting with these people. I say it again, people: BEWARE OF BRIGADOON VACATION RENTALS! Use at your own risk!

Thier rebuttle is hilarious. Who is surprised that the commenters have not included a blog link or website trackback that might lend a air of credability to their oppinion, rather than just come across as owner created users
The problem is that their silly rebuttle page comes ahead of your review of their dump in google … I recomomend that all your viewers link to your original post with the following link BRIGADOON VACATION RENTALS
Steve must be able to put this link somewhere that would get you some serious google juice

Mr. Geek-
They are just utterly clueless. Utterly CLUELESS. This entry will top theirs by tomorrow, I bet.
I really just hope that anyone serious about renting in Sequim reads what they’re in for. I am so ticked that there was nothing out there about this company before. Now I know why. They will harass anyone who has anything negative to say.
September 4, 2008 at 5:01 pm
I posted the following comment on their blog, it would be interesting to see how they respond, but I don’t suppose it will make it past moderation as it was not posted by one of their employees
If your apartments are as good as you say they are, then how do you explain the photos [1] [2] that suggest otherwise?
Also I would be interested to know what you suggest was her motivation for posting her “innacurate online blog”?
September 4, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Mr. Geek-
Oh and thank you for the award, I saw it but haven’t had a chance to post about it.
My Hapkido belt test was last night so hopefully I’ll have a bit more free time in the coming weeks.
LOL! You’re funny.

As a faithful reader who had the bad luck of finding a comment – http://zuperzee.wordpress.com/2008/08/11/claws/ – from the harrassing owner of Brigadoon Vacation Rentals on my blog, I say Kudos to you for this post!
By the way, this entry is above their blog entry on Google as of this morning (YAY!).
Did it ever occur to them that you would have photographic proof of their nasty, filthy mobile home and would post it on the World Wide Web? How moronic can they get? This is what makes me laugh. That they are that stupid.
I’m sorry that you ended up having to send in $500 bucks for a CUSHION, but I do hope this ends the harrassment from them.
September 5, 2008 at 7:52 am
Hey Helen Why don’t you sue them for emotional distress caused by their constant harassment?
I guess My blog wasn’t part of they harassment ’cause is in Spanish.. hehee..
September 5, 2008 at 8:00 am
well I enter his blog..
it is full of employees posts or his own ’cause the way to write is similar in all the comments. I mean is kind of easy to see that..
I post a comment that is awaiting for moderation.. What I’m telling him there is that Maybe the place was great 15 years ago, or whenever it started. But time and weater have a price and he might need to fix it a little..
What I was wondering is.. ’cause I really think that.. If he had answer to your comment as a really business man would, that meaning “customer is always right”, would he have more credibility to you?.
If he had said.. i don’t know mmm : ” we had seen your point, and we are working in int. You are right the lace needs a makeover and we will have it better and ready for your next visit with a 20% discuount for the problems we caused in your last visit”
Wouldn’t be that a Better answer from them?
I mean.. Is not a better way to “sell” you an apologize and at the same time may be.. sell you your next vacations?..
This man needs businees brains.
September 5, 2008 at 8:57 am
Zee- Yeah, $500 for a cushion is ridiculous. Grrr. Sorry they are harassing you too.
Sabrina- You are sweet.
You guys are all awesome!
I agree that they have handled this situation in the POOREST way possible. And it’s bullshit that they ask their customers about their experience. Because had she asked? When I went to pick up the key to the other place? I would have given her an earful. However, we had reservations to go kayaking and I didn’t want to stand there and argue about it. Plus, she duped me into that piece of crap. I was pissed. I was feeling very resentful that they make the people who rent from them do the cleaning even though we have to pay a cleaning a deposit. It’s obscene. Highway robbery!
September 5, 2008 at 11:10 am
And you know. is an insult from them to tell you “thats a midd class place” I mean not even we poor or middle “class” deserves a trashy place.
.. That was a really wrong selection of words from their part.
September 5, 2008 at 1:25 pm
*groan*
Please, please, please tell me you wrote “full and final settlement” or something along those lines in the memo section of that check. PLEASE.
pleasepleaseplease.
what assholes.
September 6, 2008 at 7:54 am
This sucks that your vacation has turned into a lingering nightmare like this.
Hopefully this draws to a close soon.
The statement (and I’ve seen similar) that this the place is for Middle America is just a cop out. To say that, they’ve got to know that the place isn’t in the same condition that they show in their advertisements.
September 6, 2008 at 9:00 am
oh, hells no. Stop that check. You know the harassment won’t stop.
Their ghetto digs are indicative of their crappy customer service mentality. Just be sure to add your review to Tripadvisor and Yelp. I never stay anywhere without checking out those two sites.
Talk about adding insult to injury.
Brigadoon sux. I’ll give you some linky love to make sure you stay at the top of that Google search.
Oh, be sure to put the pics on Flickr too and use key words. Heh! I’m all for making sure no one gets suckered in gracing the doors of their establishment …errr … trailer trash digs ever again.
September 6, 2008 at 9:51 am
Done! Some linky love:

As an avid traveller arounf the Northwest and someone who went to college in Port Angeles (which is right up the road from Sequim) I want you to know that I WILL NEVER do business with these leeches ever!
Thank you for sharing your experiences in what I think falls under the Freedom of Speech amendment (don’t ask me which one, my constitutional knowledge is sketchy, but we all know it’s there). Expressing your experience is NOT harrassment and I applaud your refusal to retreat and remove your original post.
We have your back against the horrendous business people who are in charge of that property and I hope that they discover the error of their ways and refund you fully – along with a little something for pain and suffering. That is the only way they are going to come out of this with any shred of being good business people in tact. The only way –
THEY REALLY NEED TO MAKE IT RIGHT FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
Maybe I’ll post about that rat motel we almost had to stay in while visiting Spokane . . . it looked like a murder had taken place under the bed. For reals.
September 6, 2008 at 1:06 pm
sorry for the typo – “arounf” apparently my college experience in PA didn’t learn me much! (said w/tongue totally in cheek)!
September 7, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Sabrina- Yeah. I found that statement SO offensive.
Randonesq: Umm….
Beau- Yeah. I hope so too. Usually the GOOD feelings linger for a few months. Not the bad.
And I agree. It’s a total cop out.
Scout- I BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG PUFFY PINK HEART YOU! You’re my hero!
Carrie- You know, she professes to have all these happy customers, but if you ask around town about them? People feel like I do. We talked to a bunch of people in different walks of life when they asked where we were staying and several said Brigadoon has a reputation among the locals for this kind of stuff. Sigh.
September 9, 2008 at 4:51 am
EWWW…
The first thing I thought as I was reading this graphic tale of woe was, did she take photos? And then I saw them.
You have nothing to worry about if they sue you. In fact, you should counter sue to get your money back and for mental duress. If it had been me in that lovely place, I wouldn’t be able to get out of the house for a long, LONG time…
September 9, 2008 at 1:15 pm
Pandemonic- Really the pictures don’t even do it justice. I have a super sensitive nose and the place stunk too. Sigh.
September 11, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Not to throw my two sense in here. But as a journalism and mass communications major I had to take a class in media law and ethics. Fortunately for you even if they did sue you the case would be thrown out of court, it is so extremely hard to prove slander and that is what they would have to do. It also makes it even more hard for them since they are a business which is in the public eye. Which means they cant really sue for slander…In fact if they did take you to court you guys could make a killing off them…..I wouldn’t have sent the check…cancel it.
Oh and they better not f*ck with the gays. We will metaphorically destroy any business that messes with us!
September 11, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Jesse- My degree is out of the department of journalism and mass communication as well. I also had to take Media Law and Ethics. That class was the reason I decided not to go to law school. I hated memorizing case law and precendents. lol.
September 12, 2008 at 5:25 am
Popping over from Mr. Geek’s blog, as it appears he cited us in his post today regarding bloggers blogging about bad customer service. I only wish I had received some type of response from my experiences, but then my complaints have both been with larger corporations.
So sorry this is still ongoing… We’ve been there with a hotel before, and the only good thing to come out of it was a half-@$$ed apology (sorry for swearing – not my normal blogging style). I only wish I had my blog back then, as it was very much a horrid experience.
September 12, 2008 at 9:03 pm
RC- Thanks for the heads up, I’ll have to go see what he wrote! This is what the internet has wrought. Companies that want to stay in business need to be aware that people have a voice!
April 16, 2009 at 9:02 pm
Their response blog is ridiculous. However,I really did rent from them 3 summers ago. I will say that Marilyn is not the friendliest of people. There website now says its an older mobile home. We had rented Meadow Ridge. When we showed up to pick up the keys they informed us that the cabin was having sewage problems. They moved us to Pompous Chef which was nice. I think they should have informed us beforehand though. And they did not use to have a cleaning fee either.
